Finally using some one else's blog software…
I’m a huge fan of letting other people do work for me, also known as not duplicating work. A co-worker of mine at CNET said my laziness was probably my greatest asset, meant as a compliment of course. Laziness was also one of Larry Wall’s three chief virtues of a programmer — hubris and impatience being the other two, which I’ve got a fair amount of those too.
There are thousands of better software engineer’s out there writing great open source software just for me to use. Thanks guys! Plus even more writing plug-ins, offering support, posting tips and general evangelism. I was one of the leads in bringing open source to ETRADE and am building my current company solely on an open source platform.
So I really don’t know why it took me so long to finally install WordPress to manage the mkaz.com blog, but I have now and here is my first post.
I got things setup, wrote a little import script, some rearranging of furniture and a little tweaking and I think I have everything going and happy with it. It was silly for me not to convert, it was probably easier to do than writing my own trackback service, which I did a few months ago. Plus I just got a ton of new features which my cobbled together “blog software” would never have.
The moral of the story: don’t be afraid to change, sometimes it is easier than you think and the benefits can far outweigh the status quo. Also, embrace open source.
