Free Culture
By marcus • Jul 7th, 2004 • Category: ramblings •I just recently picked up a copy of Lessig’s book Free Culture, actually the PDF has been sitting on my desktop for weeks. I really just printed it out and started reading it. How come there are no good electronic readers? Will they ever replace paper? Another topic, another day.
The book so far is a very interesting read about culture, copyrights, intellectual property, creativity and expressionism in our new networked world. Ok, one more side note, is there a new term for the age we’re in? Modern and post-modern art are already old, Modern Rock was fresh two decades ago. We need a term for our era. Ok, back to topic on hand…
According to the author Lessig,
the definition of Free Culture is a culture where you don’t have to ask permission to create something. Where you are free to take your car apart and add improvements, to create your own versions of art and literature, to look at the source code of software and create your own modifications, in effect, to explore and expand upon the world as given, without paying tribute.
The Free Culture book by Lawrence Lessig is available for free download, as well as from Amazon.com.
Expect more on these topics in posts to come, meaning I need to read more.
