Cutting Mats
I’ve been working on some non-pixelated things: thinking about, browsing and now finally cutting mats for some large prints I printed out, the three Locks on Doors series from my Peru photos.
This was primarily a test of my printers capabilities, how big can I go with my setup and from 35mm slides. I was quite impressed with the results, still not quite as stunning as the original slides but pretty darn good.
Since I’ve been asked a few times, here was my process:
- Scan. Scanned 35mm slides at 2400dpi, gives me approx 3000x2000px images, saved as tifs.
- Adjust and Test. Tweaked and adjusted ‘til I was happy. I recommend, cutting up one sheet of paper and printing out test strips to be sure what you see on screen is what you get when printed. Use the same paper and settings you will with the final.
- Final. Printed at 240dpi for an actual image size of 11”x16.5” on
Epson’s ColorLife Photo Paper (Super A3, 13”x19”)
